Donner Lake is a glacial lake about three miles long, just west of downtown Truckee. It has a calmer, more intimate feel than Tahoe, with a public beach at the west end and Donner Memorial State Park nearby.
I love that it offers lake living at a smaller scale. It is a popular spot for paddling, swimming, and fishing, and winter brings stunning snowy views.
Downtown Truckee is about five minutes away, and Interstate 80 is easy to reach.
Donner Memorial State Park offers a beach, camping, and a museum about the Emigrant Trail. Boating, kayaking, and fishing are summer favorites, and Sugar Bowl and Boreal are a short drive up the hill.
